The guard slides between the fencers sock and the shin and is only required on the front leg. Some of the most painful hits in Epee are on the shin, traditional shin guards are heavy and bulky but D3O is light weight and flexible.
D3O is a smart, rate sensitive material - the stress vs. strain characteristics are dependent on the rate of loading. This means that the harder the impact, the greater the resistance to the force.
